When designers have challenges, they create some wonderful things. It doesn’t always work. Sometimes what you connect with doesn’t connect with every single audience member, but you will find audiences who are completely connected with it and totally understand what you’re doing. I think that’s what theater is, where it’s not necessarily for everyone, but it’s for those who happen to get it. Take the play ‘Jonah’ I designed at the Roundabout Theatre. Some people understood it. Some people didn’t. But the ones who did were so completely moved and bodily changed by it. It was a very unusual piece and I thought it was beautiful. I don’t mind anymore that not everything is for everyone.
