THE SCENOGRAPHER magazine was launched in 2002, the fruit of an idea by a group of Italian and British journalists and academics who had previously collaborated on the publication of a magazine on architecture and film. The first issue was officially presented in Rome at Cinecittà film studios with the participation of the Italian Association of Scenographers (ASC).

The American Connection

That same year began a ground-breaking collaboration with the Art Directors Guild in Los Angeles, for over a period of three years, during which THE SCENOGRAPHER team developed contacts with a great number of American and European set and costume designers. The magazine was presented for three consecutive years at the prestigious Art Directors Guild Awards, for film production designers the awards ceremony that is second only to the Academy Awards.

In 2008, THE SCENOGRAPHER team founded the Study Centre for Scenic Arts (SCSA), a platform for seminars and workshops held in Italy and Great Britain. Three international events in particular stand out (INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL SCENIC ARTS) organised in Rome (CASA DELL’ARCHITETTURA) and in London (VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM) between 2008 and 2010, at which theatre professionals and academics from all over Europe attended. In that same period collaborative projects took root with the British Film Designers Guild and the Society of British Theatre Designers Guild in the UK. In Italy a number of preeminent theatre designers and directors were celebrated in features and monographic issues, among whom Pier Luigi Pizzi, Dante Ferretti, Pier’Alli, Ezio Frigerio, Danilo Donati, Ken Adam, Luciano Damiani and many others…

In 2012, THE SCENOGRAPHER launched a new collection of monographic issues on theatre design. The famed German theatre director, Henning Brockhaus was appointed artistic director of this new series of monographs. Since then, European critics and academics of note have contributed to its contents. Thanks to their expertise THE SCENOGRAPHER continues to be one of the leading journals on stage design in  Europe. The magazine has always been characterized by its elegant graphics and layout, an accurate selection of stunning images and above all by the quality of its articles penned by leading experts.  Today THE SCENOGRAPHER represents a benchmark for everyone who is passionate about scenogaphy,  whether they design, build, teach or study.
